The Barlow Institute was opened on 30th October 1909.
A programme of celebrations was held over the weekend 26th-28th June to mark the centenary, including a barn dance, farmers' market, two local rambles, a concert and a parade with floats.
This was followed by a formal celebration on Sunday, 1st November, when Ruth Padel (the great, great grand-daughter of James Barlow and Charles Darwin) unveiled a commemorative plaque, which is now displayed on the fireplace in the cafe.
